Large Canadian Insurance Platform
Enterprise AI strategy and operating transformation
A national insurance and financial-services platform needed to determine where AI could create material enterprise value across a complex, distributed organization.

The situation
The organization had grown into one of Canada's largest insurance and financial-services platforms, with thousands of professionals operating across a national network of businesses. Its scale created a significant opportunity for AI, but also made prioritization more difficult as processes, systems, controls, and levels of technology maturity varied across business units.
Leadership did not need another catalogue of potential AI applications. It needed to understand where AI could create economically meaningful change across the enterprise, how large those opportunities were, which initiatives were technically and operationally realistic, and where investment should begin.
The mandate
Develop an enterprise-wide AI strategy that identified, quantified, and prioritized opportunities to reduce operating cost and improve productivity across the organization.
Operating constraints
- The assessment had to span the enterprise rather than optimize one function in isolation.
- Recommendations needed to fit a distributed operating model with varied systems and workflows.
- Every opportunity required a clear economic case, not technical feasibility alone.
- Controls, customer obligations, data environments, and employee adoption had to be incorporated.
- The roadmap needed to guide capital allocation beyond an initial set of pilots.
What 0.5 Labs did
0.5 Labs assessed the organization's operating model from the economics and workflows of the business outward. The work identified high-volume and high-friction processes, examined where employee capacity was being consumed, and evaluated where repetitive analysis, information retrieval, document processing, coordination, and decision support could be redesigned.
Each opportunity was compared through a common framework covering addressable operating cost, capacity released, process volume, technical feasibility, data availability, implementation complexity, organizational readiness, control requirements, adoption, and time to value. The findings became a sequenced roadmap separating near-term initiatives from longer-term capabilities requiring broader system, data, or operating-model change.
What changed
Leadership moved from broad interest in AI to a defined enterprise investment thesis. The organization could see where the greatest economic impact sat, which workflows created that value, what could be pursued immediately, what depended on broader operating changes, and where adoption or implementation risk required further attention. The modeled opportunity remained distinct from savings subsequently realized through implementation.
