Compute and hosting optimization
Underused resources were tying up compute capacity and creating avoidable hosting cost inside a regulated production environment.

The situation
A Canadian financial institution was carrying underused resources across parts of its hosting environment. Capacity that could have supported higher-value workloads remained tied up, while the organization continued to absorb the cost of infrastructure that was no longer aligned with actual demand.
This was not a simple cost-cutting exercise. The resources sat inside a regulated production environment where aggressive consolidation could introduce service risk or conflict with control expectations. The institution needed evidence of what was genuinely underused, a clear distinction between required headroom and avoidable overhead, and a controlled way to release capacity without weakening reliability.
The mandate
Identify underused resources, tighten hosting configuration, and free compute for higher-value workloads without disrupting production systems or compliance expectations.
Operating constraints
- Production systems needed to remain reliable during optimization.
- Resource use and hosting cost needed to be made visible.
- All changes had to fit a secure financial-services environment.
- Capacity had to be released through a staged, low-risk rollout.
What 0.5 Labs did
0.5 Labs reviewed resource use and hosting configuration to identify where capacity was no longer earning its place. The work examined actual demand, separated genuine operational requirements from avoidable overhead, and established which resources could be cleaned up, resized, or reassigned.
Resources were released and reallocated in stages, with production stability and financial-services controls governing the rollout. The sequence allowed the team to verify service behaviour after each change before proceeding to the next group of resources. Capacity that was still needed for resilience remained in place; capacity without a current operational purpose could be reassigned.
What changed
The institution recovered compute capacity for higher-value workloads and reduced the cost of maintaining underused infrastructure. The review also established a more useful basis for future capacity decisions by tying resources to observed demand and resilience requirements. Teams could distinguish deliberate headroom from infrastructure that was simply continuing to accumulate cost.
